I am a black Canadian female from Lafayette, Louisiana attending Louisiana State University. I am a double-major in public relations and finance. I enjoy running, swimming, reading and eating. I love to watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Reba, Living Single and Friends. My mom is from Nairobi, Kenya and my dad is from Beaumont, Texas. I have random hiccups from a muscle spasm, anemia and a heart murmor. I like numbers, and love to talk. I'm phenomenal working in Excel, and love to tweet. (Along with Pinterest, Instagram & Facebook). I always thought that I was the epitome of diversity [anomalies & differences].
However, after listening to a speaker invited from the National Association of Black Accountants, (who represents a large energy company for the South), my eyes were opened to obvious other instances of diversity. Being relocated for a job often puts individuals in circumstances where their new environment has the potential to be substantially different. And for some reason, I never thought of this example of being relevant or realistic. However, it will be very soon for college kids entering the work field after graduation.
With this guest speaker, we also discussed levels of diversity and where we believed our school was. The predominantly white university of approximately 28,000 students that I attend was at the level of "tolerance" on the spectrum with oppression being the lowest and love being the highest. The concept of inclusion was also discussed, I advise reading up on the two and their differences. While we want diversity to take place in our everyday lives, we shouldn't have to force it or create focus groups or committees in my opinion. Yet if we don't, we will forever remain at the level of tolerance?
This is definitely a catch 22 that if more people took the time to think about, perhaps wouldn't remain a catch 22.
In conclusion I ask you to remember that accountants do more than count beans, the Golden Rule, and that diversity plays a much stronger role than just white and black.
