YES--Books are boring and most people "don't have time to leisurely read". However, humans are not 100% productive during 100% of their day. Thus, why not make the time to do things that will de-stress and expand your outlook on life anyways? Two weeks ago I decided to read the National Bestseller, Maine, which happened to be hated by the recent book club on campus I joined that provides FREE BOOKS! Most college campuses host book clubs for freshmen and underclassmen that the university funds. (Go check yours out!) Anyways, I got lost in this book and absolutely loved getting lost reading about the lives of women that were nowhere close to my own.
This fictional novel does not have much action or mystery, there is no deep love story or romantic scenes. Maine does however follow a large Irish family in Maine over 3 generations of women who have typical relationships with one another. I'd call it 7th Heaven meets Wysteria Lane within a novel. And only halfway through, I had already concluded that this book is the epitome of what a women's book club should read as their first novel! Nothing too heavy, but enjoyable enough to keep readers engaged and provoke thought towards the characters.
J Courtney Sullivan has provided her readers with the opportunity to step outside of their own lives and read about 4 women who were impacted by the same life choices differently because of the decade and environment they grew up in.
